In the historical centre of Valmiera, the so-called castle territory, you are met by Valmiera Museum. Its architectural complex consists of eight buildings erected and reconstructed in the 18th to 21st century in an area dominated by the castle ruins of the Livonian Order. These buildings house a permanent display, museum showrooms on three floors, a collection storage facility, a reading hall and administration offices. The museum was founded in 1959.
Valmiera Museum is one of the most important repositories of historical values in Vidzeme Region. As such, it stores around 60,000 historical and archaeological artefacts, artworks, photographs and documents obtained throughout the district. For the most part, the art collection is comprised of the works by Teodors Ūders, Jānis Kalmīte, Rūdolfs Voldemārs Vītols and Pēteris Postažs. The reconstructed Marschner House offers a permanent display. Museum showrooms give more than 20 shows per annum, including art exhibitions, thematic exhibitions, historical exhibitions and collection exhibitions. At the Castle Mound Complex, you will find a herb garden and the museum’s storage facility. The museum also receives traveling exhibitions.
