Pastariņa Museum is dedicated to writer Ernests Birznieks-Upīts (1871-1960), affectionately called Pastariņš (The Youngest) in his childhood days. Bisnieki farm, where the author was born, is more than 400 years old and, over time, has changed beyond recognition. The historical buildings have been restored to the state of the mid -20th century, when the farm was managed by the author’s brother, Kārlis Birznieks (1864-1942).

In the renovated residential building, visitors can learn about the family line of Birznieki, the author’s personal life and creative outputs. The display features a few of his original possessions, such as his actual writing desk, chair and inkpot. The renovated buildings – the granary (1894), the shallow-litter cattle barn (1896), the bath house that doubled as a grain dryer (circa 1910), the deep-litter cattle barn and the cart-house (1830) – feature thematic displays connected with motifs from the author’s stories. In the garden, visitors can see a miniature model of the old Bisnieki farm as it was during the author’s childhood; the buildings are just big enough to house teeny toy characters from his writings. The museum is a great place for family outings and school trips. The programmes are designed to integrate game and play elements that help explore the author’s stories, traditional crafts and the culinary heritage, which includes baking bread in a genuine bread oven. An extra warm welcome is reserved for newlyweds who are received according to Latvian customs. By established tradition, the museum celebrates the solstice festivals, organises traditional christenings and offers the “Journey through Time” programme.
