Dobele is known as city of lilac because of the beautiful lilac garden. The unique collection of lilac is the largest in the Europe! The founder of the garden is selectionist Peteris Upitis (1896 – 1976), therefore the garden is often called Upitis’ garden. There is also a museum of Peteris Upitis next to the garden, where you can get acquainted with his work and personality. Museum is situated in a house where Peteris Upitis lived and worked from 1949. He was also a great photographer, therefore you can see a lot of his pictures and find how did garden look more than 30 years ago. Writers, poets and others from the world of art – respected Peteris Upitis very much and visited him quite often. He had a very interesting personality.
Nowadays garden is a part of Latvian Fruit – Growing Institute. More than 200 species and hybrids of scented lilac bloom in the area of 4 ha. The annual open-air concert of classic music, held among the blossoming lilac-trees, has gained a lot of popularity. There are more things to see and taste in the garden, where in the area of 43 ha fruit-trees and berry-trees of various sorts are cultivated and tasted. Guests can pick their own fruit or buy some that has already been picked. Various fruit-based products are available for sale.
