The museum dates from the times of between wars period in independent Latvia, the first sources were those antiquities and artifacts of the region that were collected by the teachers' trade unions (1928). After WWII museum reopened in the new location from 1945, but from 2001 moved to Castle.
In 2001 an exhibition of Ventspils Museum devoted to the history of the region and of the town was opened. It meets the highest standards of museology and is an example of modern technology possibilities. Modern premises for fund preservation and renovation have been equipped in the Castle; favorable conditions have been created for concerts and conferences in the internal yard of the Castle; it is also envisaged to equip a hall for art exhibitions.
While the castle is still in the process of renovation works, which have won the recognition of professionals, the visitors can get acquainted with the digital exhibition. They can also have a look at the architecture of the Castle or have a stroll round the well-developed Castle yard and garden, where sculptures of P. Jaunzems have found their place. But the youngest visitors are welcome to the "Education Center" inside the museum to take part in different museum’s educational programs.
In the researches aspect museum have a great interest to archaeological investigation of surrounding region (town, district) from Stone Age until Early modern (industrial) archaeology, history of Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, etc.
