J. Vītols Historic House Anniņas

„Anniņas” is the summer house of the famous Latvian composer Jāzeps Vītols, the patriarch of Latvian classical music, Russian composers Rimsky – Korsakovs student at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire and its lecturer of many years standing (1886 – 1918). In 1922 this house was granted by the Latvian government to profesor Jāzeps Vītols for this particular merits in the development of Latvian music culture.
„Anniņas”, built as a bruvers house of the Gaujiena estate, is situated in a vonderfully picturesgue place. It was the place for rest and work in summer when the profesor was not busy at the Latvian Conservatoire being its founder and rector. The profesor spent his summers there till August 1944 when Latvia was taken up by the Red Army at the end of World War II.
The museum was founded in 1961, increased and reorganized in 1963 to celebrate Jāzeps Vītols centenary. The mission of the museum is to preseroe Jāzeps Vītols cultural heritage involving it in active contemporary circulation. In the museum we can see things once having belonged to Jāzeps Vītols and his wife Annija, as well as sheet music and photoes. One of the rooms is arranged in the way it used to be in Jāzeps Vītols time.
Every summer in the end of July we have Jāzeps Vītols Music Days in Gaujeina with the participation of choirs from all reģions of Latvia because Jāzeps Vītols contribution has manifested itself mainly in the development of Latvian choir music and song Festival movement.
